Date Component Summary Severity Mileage
Nov 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER The back windscreen of my 2023 Honda HRV spontaneously exploded causing an 8-inch diameter hole on the left side of the glass (when looking at it from the back). The vehicle was parked with engine off and was being filled with gasoline at a gas station. When the back hatch was opened to remove a bag (covered in broken glass) most of the remaining windscreen fell in to the back of the vehicle when the hatch was shut. The vehicle was not involved in an accident/collision and was not hit by any object. The rear window heater had been turned on in the previous minutes. Honda do not have a recall for this issue but they have issued a dealer communication and are investigating the general issue. This does seem to be a common issue according to Honda forums.

Nov 2023 STEERING When driving at highway speed (65mph), attempted to make subtly changes to stay within the center of my lane. When trying to do this, the steering wheel "ticks" or "jerks" instead of smoothly adapting. When keeping within my lane while the highway lane curved, I was able to stay in it, but every adjustment to stay in the middle of the lane during the curve ticked and almost over corrected, making it difficult to navigate smoothly. I am constantly adjusting due to the over correction of the tick/jerk. This issue seemed to go away after slowing down to 35mph, but happened again at any higher speed. No warnings/messages/ or symptoms made themselves known prior to this event. Has yet to be taken to the dealer for this issue but planning to schedule an appointment after the Thanksgiving holiday. Unable to take my car on an elongated car ride as the problem causes stress to the driver.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY/WIPER On 11/12/2023 my wife was driving the 2023 Honda HR-V from the grocery store approx. at 9:30 AM in the morning On the way home she turned on the rear defroster and the back window completely cracked and shattered. If occupants were in the back of car they could have gotten glass on them. My wife also couldn't see out the rear window while driving. My wife called the police and told them. she thought maybe someone tried to break into the car. The police looked at camera footage at the grocery store at found no one near the car. I'm trying to go through my insurance to replace the windshield. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

Nov 2023 STEERING When driving, at any speed, the steering sticks when trying to correct within the lane. If I'm driving straight and the car drifts a bit, it takes more effort to make minor corrections. I've seen reports that this happens more during colder weather. My concern is that this is my daughter's car and I fear this could cause an accident if the roads are wet or it takes even more effort than normal to correct and she over corrects. We have an appointment with our dealer on Monday. There are no warnings for this in the vehicle.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY We bought a 2023 HRV last year and yesterday out of the blue my back window exploded while it was parked. It’s clearly shattered from the inside out. We took it to our local Honda service center and they are researching the issue. Now I’m without a car while they figure out what they’re going to do. I’m worried if they do replace it, that this can happen again when we’re in the car. We transport our grandkids regularly and and their safety is our top concern.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY My 2023 Honda hrv was parked. The weather was clear, sunny and around 50 degrees. I entered my vehicle and closed the door. The rear window shattered out of nowhere. The car was not turned on. The automatic start was not used. The car was off and parked. Nothing hit the car. All I did was close the door and it shattered. I had the rear window replaced immediately. There was no warning. No cracks in the window. The car has approximately 11,500 miles on it and is in excellent condition. There was glass everywhere and I was scared to drive the car with my children in the backseat. As I would drive, more glass would break off. Honda was not notified as this happened on a Sunday and I could not wait until they were open on Monday to get it fixed.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rear windshield How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? yes Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not sure Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No Used my Honda HR-V 2023, to pick up my partner, I used the defroster on the way to the location, which was a 10 minute ride. Came back home which took another 10 min, parked outside in our driveway then heard a loud crack went to investigate and saw that it was the rear windshield that shattered completely.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY I was driving on the highway and then I heard a loud boom, and looked in my rearview mirror and my rear window was shattered. I had to pull over and there was no sign of any impact. I was so terrified that I called the police to come out to inspect it and they did not see any sign of impact either. I called Honda, and they advise that my warranty does not cover the glass since the glass does not come from them but a 3rd party. My dealership also did not assist, so I am most likely going to come out of pocket for what seems to be a known issue.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY After leaving work on 11/13/23, I came out to my car which had been parked since 9am and the rear window (back window) was completely shattered. This was the first day since last year that I had turned on my rear defroster on the way to work. There were no other markings, and no object on the ground that could have shattered the window. I called the police, who agreed that It did not look like criminal action had taken place. The security of the school which I work at filed an incident report and are in the process of evaluating cameras. Upon reading online, I became aware that many owners of the 2023 HONDA HRV have had a similar issue regarding the rear window shattering after using the rear defroster.

Honda surely knows of this problem and needs to take care of it. Our local dealer hadn't heard of it (type in Honda HR-V 2023 back glass explosion), but I don't trust them.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY I had the heat on in my vehicle and as I was driving I heard a loud popping sound which startled me. Once I pulled over, I realized my rear windshield shattered. Nov 2023 VISIBILITY I used the defroster for 10-15 minutes as I could not see out the back window. I turned it off, parked, and idled while answering email. I heard an explosion. Checked all windows, no gusts of cold air, the cars near me hadn't moved. I got out and looked around at car windows tires, in the dark it looked ok. I thought it was Disneyland and also thought I hope noone got shot. I walked away for 90 minutes for my son's hockey game. As I walked to my car. A car passing me illuminated my shattered windshield.

There was nothing inside the car, nothing anywhere near (or even far) that could’ve hit the glass to shatter it. No one nearby.
