| Jul 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | I was driving in light rain and had used the rear defroster. As I neared my home I heard a very loud noise that was very startling. Fortunately i was slowing down to make the turn into my cul-de-sac. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw that my rear windshield had shattered. As soon as I closed my car door all of the shattered glass fell into the rear cargo area. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER | After a 20 minute drive back to house, a smell of something burning became present inside the car. Rolled windows down to let smoke filled cabin escape. Upon arrival inside the garage and after parking car. As I was exiting car, the rear window exploded with my daughter a few feet from back of car. It was loud and recorded on video. Back of window was hot to touch. Honda dealer was quick to blame an impact from a foreign object, along with outside smell of fire entering the cabin while driving to explain away the damages. Also, the window being hot was blamed on a hot sun. Reached out to Honda, and I put in complaint. 3 days later, Honda dealer has been approved to fix problem. No warning lights. Just a strong smell of an electrical short that needs to be found. Glass was everywhere. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | The back windshield glass spontaneously shattered by its own when it was parked. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | In Oct. 13, 2023, I was driving and my back window exploded. The dealership said they could not do anything about it so I had to go to a glass store and have a new one put in when they had availability about 2 weeks later. So I drove with No back window during cold times. I had only had the cat a little over a year. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | We have since become aware that Honda is aware of the exploding rear window phenomenon caused by the heating coil concentration in one area, creating a hot spot and weakening the glass. My 2023 Honda HR-V is now at the dealership where we purchased it for repair and was told today that Honda will cover the cost. However, the rear window for our vehicle is on back order (I wonder why). There was no warning just a loud instantaneous explosion and glass flying. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that the alarm had sounded without incident and the contact disabled the alarm. The contact stated that hours later, the contact attempted to start the vehicle with several messages displayed on the instrument panel. After several failed attempts, the contact attempted to jumpstart the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to a dealer where the contact was later informed that rodents had chewed on the wiring harnesses due to the wiring harnesses being made with soy-based, eco-friendly materials. The contact was informed that the repair was not covered under warranty and that the repair would be performed out-of-pocket. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000. | Crash: No Fire: No Towed | 6,000 |
| Jun 2024 | STEERING | The steering rack and pinion need to be replaced. It was inspected by a Honda dealership that confirmed this system failed and it is deemed unsafe to drive. The dealership is holding the car and said it cannot be released back to me without signing a release that the car is unsafe to drive. There were no warning lights. The steering wheel progressively began to stick more when I drove, especially at high speeds on the highway. I had to manually turn the wheel back and struggled to hold it in place when driving straight. This started around early- mid May. Car was brought to the dealer on 6/15 and has been held there since then. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | While driving my vehicle going 55mph with the rear defrost on due to rainstorm, I noticed a strange smell like burning plastic but no warning lights were on. A few seconds later there was a very loud sound and I thought something large had smashed through the rear windshield so I ducked. It was terrifying and I almost drove off the road; luckily it didn't cause an accident but it could have. I pulled over and saw that the rear windshield had shattered; it was held mostly in place by the tempered glass but pieces had come off all around the edges and gone inside the vehicle and onto the road. I drove it home fearful of shards of glass falling behind me and endangering other drivers. The next morning I called my dealership who claimed they didn't know of this issue; when I told them my research found that it's been reported by many 2023 Honda HRV owners and that there's a problem with the rear defrost causing this, they were not helpful. I had the windshield replaced by Safelite the next day but am worried about my safety when I need to use the rear defrost again as this issue could happen again if not fixed. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | VISIBILITY | The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that upon closing the front driver’s side door, the rear windshield shattered into several small pieces. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, and it was discovered that the failure occurred due to a defective rear defroster system. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000. | Crash: No Fire: No | 5,000 |
| Jun 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | My rear windshield randomly shattered while it was parked in the sun in San Diego. It happened on a military base and nothing was stolen so I’m sure it wasn’t crime related. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | STEERING | There are issues with the steering. While driving on highways the steering becomes a little sticky and jerks the vehicle. This also happens on city streets just not as bad. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | My Honda HRV 2023 rear window shattered itself without impact while driving on the highway I-94 on Saturday 6/9/2024 evening with heavy rain. Defroster was used and kids are in the rear seat. The spontaneous shattering was so loud that caused a sudden panic but very luckily with my long years of driving experience, I was able to maintain the control of the vehicle. Kids are shocked and were afraid until we got home. Called the dealership and the service department has no knowledge about the rear window defect cases. Waiting for the manager to call back. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | The rear window shattered while I was in the doctors office. The Honda dealership here replaced the window from a local glass installer because the Honda window is on backorder. They will replace the glass when they receive the Honda window. The rear window defroster has a defect that causes the window to shatter. I'm just glad I wasn't driving when it happened or I could have wrecked. I haven't been charged anything for the window. There wasn't any indication that there was a problem. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Rear wind shield exploded overnight when it was parked. No one touched it. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | We bought this 2023 HRV sport on [XXX] 2024, from the dealer St Louis Honda -Dave Mungenast. It has just under 6,000 miles on it. On Monday [XXX] I was driving on a road, non highway. Driving about 20-25 mph and the rear hatch window shattered. We were not rear ended and nothing was thrown at us. We had a baby sitting rear facing in the back seat. That window could have shattered and blown all over the baby and other passenger in the rear seat causing serious injury. I drove the car to the dealer since we had the car less than 48 hours. We were given a loaner car. On Tuesday, [XXX] I received a call from Matt at the shop dealership. We were told that the back window was on back order and they did not know when they would get one. I’m very concerned that this could’ve caused serious injury to the baby that was in the backseat. And in researching this window I’m finding out that this is a common problem with the HRV. When will this problem go on recall? I bought a Honda because of the safety and reliability that comes with it. Less than 48 hours of having this new car, the back window shattered. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | My rear window randomly shattered. Car is on in park, pulled over in a parking lot as it was flooding outside. The rain stopped and then boom, the window shattered completely. Nothing hit the car or the window, nothing fell on the car, and the car wasn’t moving when this happened. I’ve seen other reports of this happening and I’m pretty concerned to drive the car around. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | STEERING | So my 2023 Honda HR-V is experiencing jerky steering. Today, it jerked so hard as I was turning a curve & it almost ran me into a concrete wall. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Rear windshield shattered | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | VISIBILITY | The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH with the rear windshield defroster engaged, the rear windshield exploded. The contact did not sustain any injuries and was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000. The VIN was not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | 22,000 |
| May 2024 | STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER | my back window exploded at a stop light, literally out of nowhere | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | VISIBILITY/WIPER | My back glass shattered while driving to work. Nothing struck it, it just exploded and was in a million pieces held together by the tint on the back window or so it seemed. I did call the state highway patrol but they said since it wasn’t an accident they couldn’t do a report. I thought at first it was a gun shot it was so loud when it popped. Called insurance, they referred to Safelite for repair. Upon googling it I saw it was an ongoing issue and thought I should file a report. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER | While leaving the driveway for work, without any warning the rear windshield shattered. Extremely loud almost like a gunshot. I was driving approximately 10 miles an hour. Upon research by my husband it appears there are several complaints of this happening to this make and model. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | STEERING | I purchased the Honda HRV Sport in February 2023. Have accumulated only 4,000 miles since mostly on city streets. whenever I drive my HRV over 5 miles at 45 or 35 miles per hour, the steering wheel intermittently wants to turn right or left and requires more force to counteract than the lane keeping assist. I thought it was the lane keep assist function that was malfunctioning without giving a warning and turned it of. That did not fix the problem. It continues to occur intermittently. The dealer was not able to duplicate. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
